Whether dual or single-parent, child-filled or childless, adoptive, selective, or arranged, there's little doubt that "families" come in all shapes and sizes. And being as varied in operation as they are in composition, these units can be a life-giving safehaven at some times; serving as a retreat from the stresses and strains of daily life. While at other times, may serve as our greatest source of pain and suffering; turning the place we typically feel safe to relax, laugh, and grow, into a place of immense pain and anguish.
You see friend, because the bond of these relationships is often so deep, the pain felt by one, can, and often does, exert a negative effect on both the individual, and the union as a whole. Which is why I like to address familial issues from both an individual, and collective posture. (See the bottom of the page for a breakdown)
Whether in the early stages of life with young children/early careers; the middle stage of teens & the transitioning woes this brings to all; or the later stages of life whereby loss and health complications tend to demand more attention/effort, there are many threats to the effective functioning of the family unit.
And while certainly not an exhaustive list by any means, some of the more common issues that lead a family to therapy are:
Successful navigation of these, or any other of the many difficulties which may befall a particular family along its timeline, it is important to both consider, and balance, the needs of the individual members as well as those of the family whole. And so regardless of which stage or posture you currently find yourselves in (perhaps you see yourself or your family reflected in one of more of the areas above), please know that I am here to help, and that together, we can begin to move you closer to the family/life relationship functioning you seek!
Come start, or continue, your journey today by selecting one of the option below.
Getting started on the right foot is incredibly important in Family/Group therapy because unfortunately, in many cases, it isn't until the unit/relationship is in crisis/dire need, that help is typically sought. This commonly results in its members arriving at the initial session so fully chocked of emotion that just by asking the first few questions, the figurative "dam" is breached and thus comes forth a tsunami of pent up feelings and buried burdens.
Because of this, I have found that a regular 50min session simply isn't sufficient in onboarding a new client family or group. Therefore, in order to ensure a solid understanding of the presenting issues; as well as to make time and space for each member to be sufficiently heard, my standard intake session for families and groups is 110 mins in duration. Please note however, that this can be shortened or lengthened as required depending on family dynamic. (see note)
This approach has been shown to be extremely effective in helping address, and often diffuse, the initial wake of emotion, and in turn, helps move the family into the more in-depth stages of the therapeutic process with a more logical and understanding manner, with participants who behave in a demeanor that's more collaborator than combattant.

This fee is based on a standard 110min session, but may vary based on family needs/requirements.
(i.e. quantity and age of family members)
****IMPORTANT****
Longer sessions WILL NOT be booked until the family or group has been fully briefed as to the reasoning for it, and ALL have consented to the extension.
Although being "family/group" therapy, once the intake session is complete, I've found it valuable to meet with each member of the group individually in order to provide them an opportunity to share any concerns they might have which might be pertinent to the issue(s) at hand. This may be something unique to themselves and/or their own role in the relationship; or perhaps, it may be something that affects the other partner(or union as a whole), but they are not yet ready to address it in a collective setting.
Either way, as a therapist, I have found this to be an invaluable tool in helping families, and groups, move towards healing and restoration, because not only does it afford me an opportunity to acquire a better understanding of both the relationship dynamic, and the presenting issue(s) as a whole; it also allows for any residual feelings/emotions from the intake session to be raised, and addressed, in a safe environment. This additional info has also proved beneficial in helping me better decide which method/modality would best serve the family/group in moving forward in the most productive, supportive, and encouraging manner possible.
****IMPORTANT****
Please be advised that NOTHING shared in these individual sessions will EVER be shared in a joint follow-up session, until the confiding member is ready to have the item shared with the others, and has provided me with EXPLICIT CONSENT to do so; full-stop!
This fee is based on a standard 50min session, but may vary based on individual needs/requirements.
****IMPORTANT****
Longer sessions WILL NOT be scheduled until the individual has been fully briefed as to the reasoning for it, and has fully consented to the extension.
Having done our intake, and subsequent individual session(s), the collective follow-up sessions are meant for us to "dig-in" to the reason(s) for having sought counselling at this time. These also become the structural basis for which we will build the strength and stability required to grow the relational bond(s), and enhance/restore the cooperative nature within the relationship as a whole. When done with comittment and intention, this naturally precipitates deeper connection and greater understanding into the alliance; not to mention the heightened ability to effectively troubleshoot and efficiently problem solve, as the family/group learns to work in a more unified manner, and strive as one cohesive unit!
This fee is based on a standard 80min session, but may vary based on family/group needs/requirements.
****IMPORTANT****
Longer sessions WILL NOT be booked until the family or group has been fully briefed as to the reasoning for it, and ALL have consented to the extension.
